Bevor mit dem Weben begonnen werden konnte, musste das gesponnene Garn auf entsprechende Spulen aufgebracht werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurde der Garnstrang (Bind, zuvor an der Knackhaspel erzeugt) über die Garnwinde (Schirmhaspel) gestreift und danach das Garn mittels des Spulrades auf Spulen aufgespult. Die Spulen waren 20 - 30 cm lang für den Kettfaden oder 8 - 10 cm lang für das Weberschiffchen (Schussgarn). Das Spulrad wurde mit der Hand über eine Kurbel betrieben.
