Description

Inscription on the back: "Yaúnde-Ngutte-Jabossi-Expedition am 21.I.01 von Kamerun aufgebrochen" [Yaúnde-Ngutte-Jabossi expedition set off from Cameroon on 21/01/01].

The photo shows members of the protection force before the start of the expedition. The photo was probably given out to all expedition members. A number of exploratory and punitive expeditions were undertaken during Ipscher's stay. For those involved, these often ended with bullet injuries or injuries sustained from blows, for which he and his colleagues provided medical care. The general medical report of Georg Ipscher for the year 1900/1901 for the Jaúnde-Jabossi expedition lists ten coloured people with bullet wounds and four with stab wounds. Regarding the bullet wounds, the report said: "All the injuries were sustained from muzzle-loaders (flintlock muskets). The bullets included pointed bullets, pieces of iron wire, potsherds, iron oxide pellets and the like. The shots were always fired from very close range. Given the significant scattering of the rifles, often crammed full virtually to the muzzle, several body parts of the same person sustained injuries".
